ALL IN THE FAMILY

The other day I read a wonderful article in the Naples Daily News titled Still In The Family. It was about the history of the Naples Zoo, formerly called Caribbean Gardens, and how far it had come since the early days of when Dr. Henry Nehrling, one of Florida's premier botanists, founded Caribbean Gardens in 1919 as a botanical garden. In 1954 margarine magnet, Julius Fleishman, began the rescue and expansion of the gardens and in 1969 animals were first introduced by the current zoo Director David Tetzlaff's parents, "Jungle Larry" and "Safari Jane" Tetzlaff. That was actually the beginning of the zoo as we know it today and when you look at how far it has come from those humble beginnings, it is truly amazing.
I am a member of the zoo and one of the great joys for me is to spend an afternoon just wandering around the zoo looking at the animals, enjoying the scenery and taking in all the wonderful tropical foliage planted years ago by Dr. Nehrling. It is wonderfully relaxing and just a great place to get away from the stress that sometimes the real estate market can put on a person.
What struck me that last time that I visited the zoo was what a great asset Naples has in the zoo, one of less than 10% of the zoos in the country that has received national accreditation since 2001. Although the zoo is today a non-profit entidy, the founding family remains heavily involved. The Naples Zoo is truly one of the things that makes Naples a very special place!

Great post - I love the new look and stronger integration of the blog with the main site!
Regarding this post, one of my favorite destinations is the local Phoenix Zoo here. My family are members and the kids always enjoy it. So, thanks for calling out about the zoo there in Naples.
