BEST PRACTICES YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN MOVING

Ideally, best practices when moving should be known for quite a while before the actual move.

Suddenly, tossing everything into boxes or storage containers on the morning of the move can only add to what is already going to be a stressful situation.

  • Get Rid of Unwanted or Unneeded Stuff
First the homeowner should look around their home and decide what they're going to take with them. The weeks before a move are the perfect time for the homeowner to give away all the old things they don't use anymore, like old clothes, books, appliances and hardware. Old newspapers can finally be thrown out, as well as things that don't work anymore. The homeowner can invite friends and neighbors to come to their home and just pick through the discarded pile. In the end, the homeowner will be taking only what they want and need.
  • Have Items Cleaned or Repaired
Up to two months before the move, the homeowner should have rugs, draperies and bedclothes dry-cleaned, shoes, clocks and watches repaired. They should take photographs of valuables, such as jewelry and antiques, crystal and silver. They should arrange for moving cartons and storage containers. If possible, they should visit their new house or apartment and start cleaning it up.
  • Update Shots, get Referals
If the homeowner has children or pets, they should get their shots and inoculations updated about six weeks before the move. athey should also get referrals for doctors, dentists, pediatricians, veterinarians and other necessary people in the city or town they're going to be moving to.

A month before, they should let the post office, bank credit card companies and all other important people and institutions  know their new address.
  • Select A Mover
The homeowner should then select a mover, using recommendations from people they know, the Yellow Pages and/or the Better Business Bureau. After they've chosen the mover, they should get an estimate and guarantee of pick up and arrival times. They should know the mover's fees, extra charges and ask to see licenses and insurance coverage.
  • Take Inventory and Itemize Belongs
The homeowner should go through every room, closet and area in the house and make a list of what's there. They should then write a description of the condition of their larger belongings and number them. That way, when the move is over, they'll be able to tell if the items have been damaged and can file a claim.
  • Pack Thoughtfully
The homeowner should pack what's easiest first, like books and linens along with everything they won't need right away. They should label each box with a number, brief description of the items inside and which room to go to in the new house. This makes it easier to keep tract of the boxes and the moving company will know exactly where the homeowner wants them.
