TROPICAL BRITISH COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE ALIVE AND WELL IN NAPLES, FLORIDA

British Colonial architecture made its first appearance in the late
nineteen hundreds. As the British Empire was extending their reign into
Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and the America's the British military
and colonists longed for some of the basic comforts of home. To fulfill
this need many of the settlers brought their own furniture to many of
these tropical climates. This caused a very significant problem, the
soft woods that were used to make their furniture back in the U.K.
couldn't stand up to the humid tropical climates. They started using
many of the local materials such as teak, mahogany, cypress, cedar, and
wicker with their softer woods. They effectively fused their British
