DESIGNING YOUR KITCHEN TAKES SOME THOUGHT AND PLANNING

kitchens_400Many times when we are looking at re-modeling kitchens, we can become enamoured with the oversized kitchens with all the stainless steel appliances. While these kitchens may be very appealing to the eye, they may not be as functional as one would think.

To take a pragmatic look at kitchens and kitchen design it's a good idea to take a look at the meals that are going to you are going to prepare on a regular basis and then design the kitchen suited to the way you cook and the way that you live. You still want to apply the triangle rule of kitchen design, the refrigerator, stove and sink should be in a compact area and you should be able to easily move from one area to the next.Taking it one step further, and I know it sounds strange, but plan your kitchen by planning your meals!

The next step is to map out how you physically make a meal. For example take a mid-week fresh gourmet salad. The first step is to map out the path with ample counter space for a cutting board and large salad bowl. The countertop should be near the primary sink with a garbage disposal. This way, as you prep your fresh salad, you can clean your lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, scallions, etc. on the cutting board and easily discard the trimmings directly into the sink. You can then wash your lettuce and put it through a salad spinner and into your large salad bowl and reserve for service.

It all sounds simple enough, but just taking time to plan out your meals may assist you in creating the perfect kitchen!
